About LMT

"Latvijas Mobilais Telefons" Ltd. is the biggest mobile network operator in Latvia. LMT operates on the mobile market since 1992 and is the first mobile network operator in the country.

LMT was established as an operator of NMT system. Within years of its activity the company has undergone rapid development. In January 1995 GSM network has started its operation, in December 1999 a dual 900/1800 Mhz network was opened.

Alongside with its main service - voice transmission - LMT similar as the leading mobile communication operators all over the world pays more attention to services related to data transmission and wireless Internet access. LMT was the first in Latvia providing its customers with WAP service (possibility to access the Internet network via mobile handset without using the computer), "Mobile bank", enabling to perform banking operations via mobile handset, as well as GPRS services (data transmission, using data package commutation principle). 
Starting with 1st September 2002 the customers of the company all over Latvia can use data transmission services.

UMTS 3G mobile network was launched in December 2004, whereas in June 2005 the EDGE technology was introduced in LMT GSM network ensuring data transmission rate up to 236 Kbits per second. Growth of both UMTS and EDGE technologies allowed to offer not yet experienced advantages in Latvia for quick access to WAP and Internet, e-mail, as well as entertainment and informatiove services. In 2006 a new data transmission technology - HSDPA enabling to reach downloading rate up to 3.6 Mbits per second and in some places even up to 7.2 Mbits per second - was introdued in LMT UMTS network.

In November 2006 LMT mobile communication network covered 99.00% of the territory of Latvia, enabling 97.76% of Latvian population to enjoy mobile communication possibilities.

LMT actively participates in the activities of international telecommunications organizations GSM Association, UMTS Forum and ETSI.

LMT has entered into roaming agreements with 626 mobile communication networks in 191 countries. Starting with 2005 LMT permanent subscribers, as well as OKarte users can use their handsets not only in European countries, but also in other continents.

The company provides only communication services and does not sell handsets, however, does its best to ensure that customers receive only high quality communication equipment. In Riga and other cities handsets and additional equipment are sold by official distributors, which have entered into agreements on high quality guarantees and customer servicing with LMT. LMT together with its distributors forms to users of mobile communications a single full service network.
